Nestled away, in the back corner of G.P. Vanier, you'll find room 115 (we used to be 611). Lurking in the shadows of this room is Mr. Young...waiting to pounce on unsuspecting students and natter on about volcanoes, hail, psychopathy, criminal law defenses, cultural diffusion, media theories, crime, and urban models of city development. He loves his job in 115 and can't wait to work with you this year.

C - Criminology 12 - Yesterday we got caught up in the talk about identity theft, shoplifting, and auto theft and worked on some questions. Today I'll have you look at: false pretense & fraud; Burglary & B&E; and arson. For the rest of the class you'll need to work on your shoplifting poster that I posted to the blog yesterday. Remember you need to explain how to identify shoplifters and how to protect product from shoplifters in your poster.
A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today, you are in the library for your next day to work on your major semester long project. You can find the assignment on the school computers in K:\Mr. A. Young\Earth and Space Science 11\Earth and Space Science Major Project.pdf. Remember that your Second Milestone is May 28th...hey wait a second that's today! So, today you will need to submit three completed pages (of which I will choose one to grade). Remember that your topics need to be related to class discussions or subjects covered in the course AND you need to have a research component. If you'd like to hand in the missing installments from last time you'll need to hand in eight. There's only two more days for work in the library after today so please be efficient!
B - Social Studies 10 - You are going to be making a children's story book about the building of the Canadian Pacific Railway from Toronto to Vancouver. Since the book is targeted for 5 to 9 year old children you'll need to choose your words carefully and have age appropriate language. 5 to 9 year old children are, however, not dumb and you are trying to tell a story of the challenges involved in building the railway along with the characters who did it (Note: my eleven year old daughter will be marking these books with me). You will need to include the building of the railway in three locations (northern Ontario, the prairies, and through the mountains in B.C.), you'll need to show what passenger cars and locomotives looked like, you'll need to show what trestles and tunnels looked like, you'll need to identify the main characters (Smith, Macdonald, Van Horne, and Onderdonk) and show what it was like for workers (different conditions for whites and coolies), you'll need to show the last spike in Craigellachie and have a map of the railway.
Pau Hana!

A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today you need to finish questions 12 through 21 on page 426 of the Earth Science and the Environment text. we are going to look at energy in the atmosphere. We will focus on absorption, scattering, and reflection of incoming energy along with energy balance, storage, and transfer (think heat and temperatures at the poles and the equator).
Afterwords we'll watch a video on heat and begin to understand the connection between the areas of surplus and deficit on the planet and how they help to drive weather patterns. Sweet!
B - Social Studies 10 - Today we'll discuss the insane geography that the CPR was constructed upon. We'll look at the stretches of northern Ontario where track was built and then rebuilt again due to "geographic difficulties".
CPR construction north of Lake Superior
We'll learn about Andrew Onderdonk and the railway through BC. We'll focus on John A. Macdonald's "National Policy" and look at the connection between Sir Hugh Allan's Pacific Railway Company, the Pacific Scandal and Macdonald's defeat in 1873. We'll then look at George Stephen & Donald A. Smith's Pacific Railway Company which hired William Van Horne and Andrew Onderdonk to build the railway. You'll need to work on questions 5, 9, 12, 13, and 14 from page 122 of the text.Tomorrow you'll need to begin storyboarding your children's book on the building of the CPR.
C - Criminology 12 - Today we'll finish up a few notes from yesterday and then you'll need to answer the following questions I had posted on the blog:
- What are the differences between a professional and an occasional thief?
- What is a "situational inducement"?
- What is a "Booster", a "Heel", a "Snitch", a "Fence"?
- Why do you think Winona Ryder shoplifted (motive)?
- Do you think the penalties given to her were appropriate (3 years probation, 4000 hours of community service, $9000 fine, and drug & psychiatric counseling)? Why or why not?
- Explain the 5 types of Motor Vehicle Theft (NEW QUESTION)
You work for the Retail Council of Canada and have been hired to create a poster campaign about shoplifting. The poster campaign has two purposes:
- To help employees identify people who are shoplifting and
- To explain how to reduce shoplifting in stores (target hardening and target removal strategies)
Look at figure 11.2 on page 257 in the Criminology text for help. Here are some further ideas and points.....
Spot the Shoplifter: Unfortunately, there is no typical profile of a shoplifter. Thieves come in all ages, races and from various backgrounds. However, there are some signs that should signal a red flag for retailers. While the following characteristics don't necessarily mean guilt, retailers should keep a close eye on shoppers who exhibit the following:
- Spends more time watching the cashier or sales clerk than actually shopping.
- Wears bulky, heavy clothing during warm weather or coats when unnecessary.
- Walks with short or unnatural steps, which may indicate that they are concealing lifted items.
- Takes several items into dressing room and only leaves with one item.
- Seems nervous and possibly picks up random items with no interest.
- Frequently enters store and never makes a purchase.
- Enters dressing room or rest rooms with merchandise and exits with none.
- Large group entering the store at one time, especially juveniles. A member of the group causes a disturbance to distract sales staff.

C - Criminology 12 - Today we will take the first twenty-five minutes of class to write our violent crime quiz. After we'll begin our look at property crimes. Then we'll discuss the history of theft and make sense of the differences between occasional and professional thieves. We'll turn our focus to shoplifting and examine the Winona Ryder case. You'll need to answer the following:
- What are the differences between a professional and an occasional thief?
- What is a "situational inducement"?
- What is a "Booster", a "Heel", a "Snitch", a "Fence"?
- Why do you think Winona Ryder shoplifted (motive)?
- Do you think the penalties given to her were appropriate (3 years probation, 4000 hours of community service, $9000 fine, and drug & psychiatric counseling)? Why or why not
B - Social Studies 10 - Today we'll continue our look at BC (July 20, 1871) and PEI (July 1, 1873) entering confederation. Today we focus our attention on PEI and we'll look at . You'll need to work on some questions today: 6, 7, 8, 10, & 11 on page 122.
A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today we'll continue to look at the controversy regarding human induced changes to the atmosphere specifically:
- Acid deposition through H2SO4 and HNO3;
- Ozone depletion through CFCl3Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's); and
- Global Warming through Greenhouse Gas emissions CO2, CH4, N2O and SF6

B - Social Studies 10 -Today your 'Ole Bill Coot storyboarding / cartoon assignment is due... So the first part of class is cut, colour & glue cause it's due day! You also have three questions to submit today (# 7 from page 99 and #'s 13 & 14 from page 100). After you've worked on this we'll take a look at BC (July 20, 1871) and PEI (July 1, 1873) entering confederation. We'll look at the three options and who supported them (Annexation & J.S. Helmcken; Union - Confederation & Amor de Cosmos, Anthony Musgrave and John Robson; and Imperialist which was generally anti-confederation and anti-annexationist). You'll need to work on some questions today & tomorrow (6, 7, 8, 10, & 11 on page 122).
A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today you'll begin the class with an atmosphere in the vertical activity. You'll need to plot the temperature profile of the standard atmosphere and the atmosphere over Buffalo, New York. There are some questions comparing the two atmospheric profiles. We'll try to see the connection between the thickness of the atmosphere and temperatures. Then we'll look at the controversy regarding human induced changes to the atmosphere specifically
- Acid deposition through H2SO4 and HNO3;
- Ozone depletion through CFCl3Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's); and
- Global Warming through Greenhouse Gas emissions CO2, CH4, N2O and SF6
C - Criminology 12 - Today we are off to the library for our next blog assignment and I'd like you to tell me about auto theft. I'd like you to look up information on why people steal cars, where in Canada most cars are stolen from, what types of vehicles are most commonly stolen and I'd like you to tell me how much auto theft is actually happening in Canada (rates). Then I'd like you to tell me methods of protection (how to stop your car from being stolen). Don't forget that tomorrow you have a unit final on violent crime so I hope that you get ready for it.
