A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today you need to finish questions 12 through 21 on page 426 of the Earth Science and the Environment text. we are going to look at energy in the atmosphere. We will focus on absorption, scattering, and reflection of incoming energy along with energy balance, storage, and transfer (think heat and temperatures at the poles and the equator).
Afterwords we'll watch a video on heat and begin to understand the connection between the areas of surplus and deficit on the planet and how they help to drive weather patterns. Sweet!
B - Social Studies 10 - Today we'll discuss the insane geography that the CPR was constructed upon. We'll look at the stretches of northern Ontario where track was built and then rebuilt again due to "geographic difficulties".
CPR construction north of Lake Superior
We'll learn about Andrew Onderdonk and the railway through BC. We'll focus on John A. Macdonald's "National Policy" and look at the connection between Sir Hugh Allan's Pacific Railway Company, the Pacific Scandal and Macdonald's defeat in 1873. We'll then look at George Stephen & Donald A. Smith's Pacific Railway Company which hired William Van Horne and Andrew Onderdonk to build the railway. You'll need to work on questions 5, 9, 12, 13, and 14 from page 122 of the text.Tomorrow you'll need to begin storyboarding your children's book on the building of the CPR.
C - Criminology 12 - Today we'll finish up a few notes from yesterday and then you'll need to answer the following questions I had posted on the blog:
- What are the differences between a professional and an occasional thief?
- What is a "situational inducement"?
- What is a "Booster", a "Heel", a "Snitch", a "Fence"?
- Why do you think Winona Ryder shoplifted (motive)?
- Do you think the penalties given to her were appropriate (3 years probation, 4000 hours of community service, $9000 fine, and drug & psychiatric counseling)? Why or why not?
- Explain the 5 types of Motor Vehicle Theft (NEW QUESTION)
You work for the Retail Council of Canada and have been hired to create a poster campaign about shoplifting. The poster campaign has two purposes:
- To help employees identify people who are shoplifting and
- To explain how to reduce shoplifting in stores (target hardening and target removal strategies)
Look at figure 11.2 on page 257 in the Criminology text for help. Here are some further ideas and points.....
Spot the Shoplifter: Unfortunately, there is no typical profile of a shoplifter. Thieves come in all ages, races and from various backgrounds. However, there are some signs that should signal a red flag for retailers. While the following characteristics don't necessarily mean guilt, retailers should keep a close eye on shoppers who exhibit the following:
- Spends more time watching the cashier or sales clerk than actually shopping.
- Wears bulky, heavy clothing during warm weather or coats when unnecessary.
- Walks with short or unnatural steps, which may indicate that they are concealing lifted items.
- Takes several items into dressing room and only leaves with one item.
- Seems nervous and possibly picks up random items with no interest.
- Frequently enters store and never makes a purchase.
- Enters dressing room or rest rooms with merchandise and exits with none.
- Large group entering the store at one time, especially juveniles. A member of the group causes a disturbance to distract sales staff.
