Day 11 - Wednesday Septmber 22. 2010

A quick reminder that tonight is "Meet the Creature" night here at Vanier. Parents are to meet in the gym at 7 and then it's off to advisory classes. I hope to see as many parents tonight as possible. Till then...

A - Introduction to Law 9/10 - Yesterday we started our look at serious crime focusiong on the difference between serial and mass murder. We started our look at the "Unholy Trinity" of serial killer characteristics and today we'll continue our look at these people by examining the psychopath. Yesterday I indicated that Dr. Robert Hare of the University of British Columbia created a checklist called the PCL-R (Psychopathy Checklist Revised). We didn't get to the video on how profiling was developed in the F.B.I. Behavioural Science Unit (through the efforts of many highlighted by the work of John Douglas) so we'll watch that today. The first part of the video focuses on Wayne Williams and then looks at Robert Hansen. Don't forget that in Canada the R.C.M.P. call the technique criminal investigative analysis.

D - Geography 12 - Today we'll finish our look at the interior structure of the Earth. We'll watch a Brain Pop video on this along with the rest of the Amazing Planet DVD from National Geographic. You may use the Earth Interior web page to help with questions 7 & 8 from page 366 of your Geosystems text (answers can be found between pages 334 and 336 of the text). We'll then discuss the differences between Sial and Sima (continental and oceanic crust) along with figuring out what buoyancy and isostasy are. You'll need to complete question 9 from page 366 of the text (isostasy, isostatic rebound, and crustal equilibrium). If you need help look at the Geology for Kids web page, the flash animated movie on the Kids Know It network, or the enotes Isostasty: World of Earth Science page. If you missed it here's part of the the DVD

C - Law 12 - OK so yesterday we got through our discussion on the Fundamental Freedoms guaranteed in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (section 2 a-d). Today I will have you go over the B. (R.) v. Children's Aid Society of Metropolitan Toronto (1995) case and you'll need to complete questions 1-5 on the case. Next, I will need you to review the Keegstra case (R. v. Keegstra, 1990) where you'll be a newspaper reporter writing a respective story on the case after the Supreme Court of Canada made its final decision on the matter. You need about four paragraphs dealing with: a brief history - summary of the case (why he was charged and what the decisions in the lower courts were); an explanation of the charter rights violations and Keegstra's defence; an explnation of the decision made by the justices of the Supreme Court; and opinion from both sides (those for and against Keegstra's defence). Use the questions 1-6 on page 39 in the Law text as a guide (this will be considered as your first major project in the class).

Sir: Researching for a project on the Keegstra affair (I attended most of the trial) , and would appreciate hearing (ie: reading) the results - if available.
One of the sections I am working on is that of the modern 'fallout' from that event (changes, if any, in public, institutional, legal, etc. attitudes and protocols, curricula, etc.).
Thanks! in advance,

Harry J. S. Ludwig
