C - Criminology 12 - Today we will be in the library working on our second journal / blog entry. Today you will need to give me your URL for your blog page and then I'll take a look at your last entry on crime theory. Your blog today is about the difference between behaviour that we deem deviant and behaviour we deem as criminal.
Your first task is to explain what the two words mean...what is devaince and what is criminal?
On Friday I gave you an explanation of deviance...What is deviant behaviour? A simple explanation of deviant behaviour could be any action that violates cultural norms (formal norms like laws - or informal norms like nose picking). This is a difficult concept because what an individual or sub culture in society defines as deviant is contextually situated (meaning what I think is deviant may be different for you; it is subjective - influenced by personal considerations). I also gave you an example of what we think criminal behaviour is What is criminal is the codification of what a society as a whole deems as deviant. Homicide is criminal because as a society we believe that taking another life is unacceptable and deviates from the accepted cultural norm that we wish our country to be like.
Your second task is to come up with a small list of three things that are Deviant but not Criminal and three things that are Criminal but not Deviant.
On Friday I gave you an example...Take smoking in public. You may think that this behaviour is acceptable because an individual has the choice to consume a cigarette and they are merely harming themselves...no problem right? You may, however, think this behaviour is unacceptable. Second-hand smoke is hurtful to others because they could be harmed by someone else's behaviour. So what is deviant in many cases is subjective. In this case second hand smoking is deviant but not criminal. An example of something that is criminal but not deviant might be public nudity, personal drug consumption, prostitution or texting while driving.
So using the text and your brains you need to come up with a list of 3 things that are deviant but not criminal and a list of 3 things that are criminal but not deviant. After you'll need to take one act from either list and explain why it should be criminalized or why it should be decriminalized. You can use pages 11-15 in the Criminology: The Core textbook for help too.
B - Social Studies 10 - Today we will continue our quick two week unit on Aboriginal peoples and the expansion west leading to early contact and trade. Today you will get back into groups of four to work on a collaborative poster assignment. Each group member will be responsible for one group of First Nations peoples (Pacific Northwest, Plains, Plateau/Interior, and subarctic/arctic). For each large grouping each person will have to research all of the following:
1. Landscape & location
2. Climate
3. Food and Resources
4. Adaptions to location
Once you've finished the work on each separate group you will place your information on a large poster sheet with a map of Canada in the middle showing where those groupings of First Nations peoples lived.
Now a note about the groupings....I know that there are vast differences between the Haida and Nuu Chah Nulth people. When we look at large groups like "Pacific Northwest" we are generalizing much the same as if we said look at European people (which would be implying that Spaniards are the same as the Dutch). So remember that we are making vast generalizations about many many people. Take a look at the Canada First Nations: Native Civilizations webpage from the University of Calgary for help.
A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today, we'll review and wrap up volcanism by looking at the questions I asked you to complete last week. You'll need to hand in all of your work today so that I can get it back to you (so you can study for your unit final this week - Wednesday!). Next we shift into mountain building (orogony) by looking at folded mountains today and we'll watch the first two segments of the CBC Geologic Journey episode on the Rockies. So today and tomorrow, you'll need to work on the question handout on the Rockies video.
