Today's schedule is D-C-B-A

D Block Human Geography 11 - Today our key issue is, "Why Do Services Cluster in Settlements"? Services are clustered in settlements. Rural settlements are centers for agriculture and provide a small number of services; urban settlements are centers for consumer and business services. One-half of the people in the world currently live in a rural settlement, and the other half in an urban settlement. We'll look at clustered (circular and linear) and dispersed rural settlements and a brief history of cities:

Lastly questions...
  1. How are strips of land allocated in a clustered rural settlement?
  2. In a linear rural settlement, why are settlements clustered around roads and/or rivers?
  3. What early structures and permanent man-made features were associated with early public services?
  4. What early structures and permanent man-made features were associated with early business services?
  5. Why did large urban centers collapse with the fall of the Roman Empire in the 5th century CE?

C Block Criminology 12 - Yesterday we got through a bit of the 2017 Investigation Discovery documentary Casey Anthony: An American Murder Mystery so today we'll finish it.

Remember you have a question to answer for me:

How does the concept of Schadenfreude apply to the Casey Anthony trial? How would low self-esteem make someone more likely to seek out schadenfreude-filled crime media?

HLN's Nancy Grace covered the Casey Anthony trial heavily in 2011. To her credit Nancy Grace was a criminal prosecutor in Georgia. Here is a CNN bio on her..

Grace had her own trial of Casey Anthony in the media. Here is a sampling of her coverage

B Block Introduction to Law 10 - Today you will be responsible for working on the case questions from R. v. Thornton (1990) q 1-4 p.70 ( Main Question: Did Thornton have a legal duty arising out of the common-law to inform the Red Cross of his HIV status?) and R. v. Sansregret (1985) q 1-6 p.72 (Main Question: Is willful blindness relevant to a mistake of fact in consent in a sexual assault charge?)

A Block Law 12 - Today we'll begin watching the black comedy of The War of the Roses, based on a book by Warren Adler. From the "All Movie Guide" by Hal Erickson:

The War of the Roses can best be described as a slapstick tragedy concerning the decline and literal fall of a marriage. After 17 years, Oliver and Barbara Rose want a divorce. Not for this couple is there anything resembling a "civilized understanding": Barbara wants their opulent house, and Oliver isn't about to part with the domicile. Barbara nails the basement door shut while Oliver is downstairs, Oliver disrupts Barbara's fancy party by taking aim at the catered dinner, Barbara lays waste to Oliver's sports car....and so it goes, culminating in a disastrous showdown around, about and under the living room's fancy chandelier.

We will watch this movie today and next week in class.
