Today's schedule is A-B-C-D
A & D - Criminology 12 - Today, you'll be introduced to Edwin H. Sutherland's Differential Association Theory (he introduced the concept "white collar crime"). We'll take a few notes and see what we can find on the Internet about white collar crime....spoil alert LOTS!
National Check Fraud Center
Robert O. Keel White Collar Crime
Canadian Encyclopedia White Collar Crime
Federal Bureau of Investigation White Collar Crime Division
Understanding White Collar Crime
News Stories of White Collar Crime
Tomorrow we'll watch about 30-40 minutes of the movie the Corporation in order to help us understand this.
B - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today, we'll begin our look at the astronomy section of Earth and Space Science. This year is the 42nd anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing (July 20, 1969) an incredible feat for humankind and when you take a look at the moon, reflect on that.
You can find out all kinds of neat data on NASA's Sky Events calendar. There's lots of astronomical events occurring this year, but our best chance for an eclipse will be a lunar eclipse on December 10, 2011 (at moon set which means early in the morning). This month, the New Moon (No not the movie!) occurs today June 1st @ 14:03 PST while the Full Moon occurs on June 15th @ 13:30 PST (also when a total lunar eclipse happens but we will not be able to see it).
I will then hand out your Stars and Galaxies Worksheets # 1 & 2 which we will work on next along with "For Review" questions 1-7 on page 546 (don't complete it for homework - we'll work on it both at the end of class today and in class tomorrow).
C - Geography 12 - Today we are going to make sense of ecosystem evolution and community succession (thrown in will be the terms establishment and extinction). We'll try to understand how species co-evolve and adapt to create complex communities (self regulation and emergent properties) and then we'll look at Mount Saint Helens to understand primary and secondary succession. You'll need to complete questions 21 & 22 from page 662 of your Geosystems text along with a question on fire ecology and the effects of modern fire suppression. For more on ecosystem services and conservation see the National Geographic Earth Pulse website. After, we look at the ethics associated with resource use alond with the different forms of "capital" and understand the concept of "natural capital" and we'll end the class with a seemingly simple question...."How Much do You Consume?" At the end of the class we'll begin watching "Human Footprint" and today I'll ask you to begin tracking your water consumption throughout the week.
