Exam Week Part 2

Hello Geography family.

On the Provincial Exam you have a case study (essay) that is worth 18 out of 93 marks (this means that one question is worth almost 20% of your final exam mark). There is no way to study for a topic because the topic changes from year to year. You can prepare for the question, however, by practicing answering the questions that will be asked of you. The case study is a skill based question, in essence it asks you to look at the Big Picture which really is what Geography is all about. The case study is divided into three sections:

The first question will always be asking you to describe and explain the physical environment of the subject area (which could be the North Sea, the Arctic, Indonesian rain forests, the Colorado River, Lake Baikal, etc..). In this you will need to look at the data they provide you and provide detailed information about the area in question. The second question will always be asking you to assess or interpret the human impact on the subject area (which usually include economic benefits and detractions, environmental and social impacts, etc..). In this you will need to make connections to the larger picture (e.g.: drilling for oil in the arctic has both local and global implications - oil spills, disruption of wildlife, global warming). The last question will always be about explaining the difficulties in coming up with solutions to the problems at hand or assessing
the management of the area in question usually the competing environmental perspectives - economic gain versus environmental stewardship).

In order to help you with the case study on the exam there are previous student samples of the Bangladesh case study (from June 2006) on the Graduation Program - Provincial Examinations - Student Samples website. Scroll down to Geography 12 and click on the Case Study Scoring Guide.

You can also use StudyBuzz. Access the online tutoring and exam prep site through LearnNowBC. For information on how to loging check out StudyBuzz at Edvantage press here.

Although it is not my class site you can always check out the Geography 12 Provincial Exam Review site for students at Prince George Secondary School here.

You should be looking through your weekly note/work packages (yes all 18 of them), your unit tests (which are all made from previous provincial exams), and the course outline I handed to you back in September (remember there is a study guide for the final exam in the outline).

You can ask me questions, seek help, and pick up your weekly note / work packages in room 611 on Wednesday or Thursday morning (I am supervising exams both afternoons). Don't forget that I'll have breakfast ready for you Friday morning before the exam. Good luck and remember...Geography Rules!
