Today's schedule is D-C-Lunch-A-B
There is a meeting TODAY at noon in Mr. Bourget's room for the 2010 Geogrpahy/Geology Mount Saint Helens Trip. All Geography and Geology 12 students are eligible to participate and if there is room left over the Earth and Space Science 11 students can fill the void. I'll let the ESC11 students know if there is room later on this week.
C - Criminology 12 - Today we will be in the library working on our second journal / blog entry. Over the weekend I asked you to watch some more news broadcasts and see how many and what kind of crime stories they show. I asked you to do this because there is a direct link between perception of crime and what the news media portrays of crime. So today I would like you to tell me what you think about crime trends here in Canada / B.C. I want you to tell me if you think crime is increasing, decreasing, or staying the same. I would like you to be specific in your thoughts (ex: if you think crime is increasing what kind of crime? what age group? where? why?) Next find a news story that helps to explain your ideas about crime trends, make a link to the news article on your blogsite and then tell me all about how that story exemplifies your thoughts on crime trends.
A - Earth & Space Science 11 - On Friday we finished our identifying minerals lab and had some additional questions to complete (questions 6-12 from page 43). Today we'll briefly go over mineral families (Silicates, Oxides, Carbonates) and then spend time discussing the way ores and minerals are extracted (surface and sub-surface). We'll look at the Berkeley Pit in Butte Montana to better understand acid mine seepage (an important concept for us to understand). Check out the Waterblogger's explanation here. We'll then look at Cat Face Mountain in Tofino and Selkirk Metals Corporation application to conduct exploratory drilling for copper and molybdenum and the effects of the Mount Washington copper mine on the Tsolum River. Thursday & Friday we're in the library where I will introduce to you the major project for the year and outline the mining project you'll be working on which is due next week.
NOTE: our first quiz will be on Friday, next week (February 26th).
B - Social Studies 10 - Today we'll continue with our work in the Atlas on map conventions. Today we'll work through the sections on scale, distance, direction, and location. Once we've completed this work we'll shift into our Physiographic Regions of Canada poster / presentation assignment. We'll be in the library on Wednesday through Friday this week to start work on the project.
