Today's schedule is BADC

B Block Criminology - Remember, not all business is bad but we do need to understand the "corporate view" of white collar criminal activity. What is it that makes a successful business person and what kind of ethical behaviour is valued by corporate culture? To that end,

"What is "Churning"?
What is "Short and Distort"?
What is "Pump and Dump"?

What is "Market Manipulation"?

And a Canadian case study...Bre-X Minerals Ltd. was a Canadian gold mining company that infamously defrauded investors by falsifying gold samples and misstating its available gold reserves. Read more about the story at Investopedia or at Business Insider or from the Calgary Herald. The story was actually turned into the 2016 movie Gold

And...
John Oliver Pig Butchering Scam (showing the connection between corporate crime and con artists/scams) *Warning potty mouth and adult humour so watcher beware
John Oliver Cryptocurrency Scams (showing the connection between corporate crime and con artists/scams) *Warning potty mouth and adult humour so watcher beware
So, some people use Enterprise / Business to con people, or the company, out of cash. You'll have four questions to answer for me:

1. What’s the psychology behind the con and what can we learn from it? (check out The 7 Psychological Principles of Scams: Protect Yourself by Learning the Techniques)
2. How does a con man identify a mark? (check out Maria Konnikova on How we Get Conned and her interview below)
3. What are the nine phases of a long-con game? (check out The 9 Stages of the Big Con and the 4 Phases of Small Value Fraud)
4. What is the one fact that instantly makes you harder to con? (check out Protect yourself from scams and fraud

Would you invest with this guy?

A Block Physical Geography - Today we'll be looking at streams and drainage basins. You'll need to work on a few definitions, a diagram, and questions in your Geosystems Core textbook.

  • What is stream discharge, how is it calculated and what factors will increase discharge? (p.276)
  • Explain the difference between stream competence and stream capacity (p.278)
  • How does a stream transport its sediment load? What processes are at work? (p.278-9)
  • Using Figure 5.9, identify the regions where precipitation is the scarcest and the most abundant. (p.130)
  • What is the nature of groundwater pollution? Can contaminated groundwater be cleaned up easily? Explain (p.134-135)
You can also use Chapter 18 - Fluvial Geomorphology  or Chapter 17 - Drainage Basin Hydrology in the online Investigating Earth's Systems text by Andrew J. Perkins.

Canadian Geographic has a good article on the Peace/Athabasca Mapping water flow in the Peace-Athabasca Delta
