Today's schedule is A-B-C-D

B Block Physical Geography 12 - Today we'll continue our look at weather; working on an activity called “Sunlight and the Seasons” (week 13 package "Solar energy and the reason for seasons"). After you have finished this activity you need to complete questions 17, 19, and 20 from page 62 in your Geosystems textbook. If there's time we'll see what Bill Nye has to say about seasons. Below you'll find a decent if somewhat slow video on seasons...
and what does the rotation of the Earth on its axis -giving us seasons-look like and mean for us?

Don't forget, we'll start the class by looking at the synoptic chart for North America and begin to understand weather station plots. Take some time on the following sites to learn more and to practice your weather operational analysis capabilities:
WW2010 - University of Illinois Weather site
National Weather Service "Jet Stream" online weather school
American Meteorological Society "Data Streme"
British Broadcasting Corporation Reading Weather Maps
USA Today Reading Weather Maps

Practise at: Weather Office (Environment Canada) Operational Analysis Charts or at the Data Streme site above

C Block Human Geography 11 - Today we'll examine the key question "Why Do Ethnicities Engage in Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide"? Our focus for today will be the former Yugoslavia (1991-1999) and ethnic cleansing (we'll take a deeper look at Srebrenica in the Bosnian War). Ethnic cleansing is undertaken to rid an area of an entire ethnicity so that the surviving ethnic group can be the sole inhabitants. The point of ethnic cleansing is not simply to defeat an enemy or to subjugate them but it  involves the removal of every member of the less powerful ethnicity - women as well as men, children as well as adults, the frail elderly as well as the strong youth. There's a good timeline and in depth page of the Balkan Wars (including Srebrenica in the Balkan War and also Podujevo in the Kosovo war) on the CBC here. You'll need to work on the following for me:

  1. Define ethnic cleansing
  2. How is ethnic cleansing different than normal warfare?
  3. Regarding the Yugoslav refrain that was common during the rule of Josip Tito, identify  Yugoslavia’s: Five Nationalities; Four Languages; Three Religions; and Two Alphabets
  4. Why did Serbs and Croats in Bosnia (aka Bosnia-Herzegovina) ethnically cleanse themselves of Bosnia Muslims?
  5. After the 1996 Dayton Accords (end of Yugoslav civil war) What country controlled Kosovo
  6. What ethnic group lives in Kosovo (and %)?
  7. With the breakup of Yugoslavia, what began to happen in Kosovo?
  8. How did the U.S. and U.N. respond?
  9. Define balkanized
  10. Define balkanization

D Block Criminology 12 - Today we are in the library to begin our work on the media literacy component of our course. Once you log on to the computers go to the two links below then work through (by responding to the post and to each other).  How Much Media do you Consume? followed by the question on Why is it important to study crime media?

Be sure to read all that I am asking you to answer (there are two questions for the "How Much..."thread). For Media consumption consider the following...

Look at this Kaiser Family Foundation study from 2010; it will give us a good idea about amounts of media youth consume (Generation M2) . Last Thursday I asked you to write down what media format you interacted with for a time period throughout the day and to guesstimate how much time you interacted with it. I know that you are a generation of multi-taskers (and that you are interacting with this blog right now) so try to be as honest as you can about what you consume/interact with.

For the "Why is it important..."thread please consider the following:
We're not seeing more police shootings, just more news coverage
Canadians still wildly overestimating the level of violent crime
