B Block Social Studies 11 - We'll look at the changes to immigration in Canada, the points system and multiculturalism. I’d like you to examine the transformation of Canadian society in the 1960's and the 1970's (challenging the status quo). You'll start with the beginning episode of Canada: A People’s History Volume 11 “Years of Hope and Anger” which sets the stage for the 1960’s. After watching it, I'd like to talk with you about your impressions of the section and your thoughts on the 1960’s. Next, you'll get the “Challenging the Status Quo” worksheet and you'll need to fill it in using pages 177 to 181 and pages 208 to 210 of the Counterpoints textbook along with the Canada: A People's History episodes “Do Your Own Thing” (which deals with the “youthquake” and the environmental movement) “A Question of Equality” and “A Most Fundamental Choice” (which deal with the women's movement in Canada) and lastly “Taking Back the Past”(which deals with the Aboriginal Nations rights movement).
C Block Geography 12 - Today we look at mesoscale convective complexes and tornadoes. I'll show you some footage of a tornado captured on video by a Kansas television crew. This footage was actually detrimental to tornado safety as most people who saw it assumed that a highway overpass provides shelter and safety.
This proved deadly with the May 3, 1999 Moore Oklahoma F5 tornado. We'll also watch footage of the Moore tornado and see the damage it wrought. We'll watch a bit of the wind episode from the BBC Series "The Weather" and hear from a man that survived a direct strike from an EF5 tornado.Then we'll watch the Raging planet video on Tornadoes and while it is on you can work on questions 15 and 16 from page 248 of your Geosystems textbook.
D Block Crime, Media and Society 12 - Today we're back in the library working on the collaborize classroom site. Now for today I'd like you to do two things:
- Finish your work on the Social Class and crime question connected to both the Law & Order Los Angeles episode we watched (called "Hollywood" about the Bling Ring) and the People like Us PBS documentary I posted last week.
- Work on the Colton Harris-Moore thread question about the media's reporting of crime and celebrity.
