Monday, May 11. 2015

Today's schedule is A-AG-B-C-D

B Block Social Studies 11 - Today we'll finish our focus on the end of the war in the Pacific looking at the Manhattan Project and the use of nuclear weapons in Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki). This takes us to V-J Day and the end of World War Two. I'll have you work on questions 1-4 on page 121 (Is the use of Weapons of Mass Destruction ever justified?) and questions 1 & 2 on page 122 from the Counterpoints textbook. We'll watch "Seconds from Disaster: Nagasaki"

C Block Geography 12 - Today we'll continue our look at weather; working on an activity called “Sunlight and the Seasons” (week 12 package "Solar energy and the reason for seasons"). After you have finished this activity you need to complete questions 17, 19, and 20 from page 62 in your Geosystems textbook. If there's time we'll see what Bill Nye has to say about seasons. Below you'll find a decent if somewhat slow video on seasons...
and what does the rotation of the Earth on its axis -giving us seasons-look like and mean for us?

Don't forget, we'll start the class by looking at the synoptic chart for North America and begin to understand weather station plots. Take some time on the following sites to learn more and to practice your weather operational analysis capabilities:
WW2010 - University of Illinois Weather site
National Weather Service "Jet Stream" online weather school
American Meteorological Society "Data Streme"
British Broadcasting Corporation Reading Weather Maps
USA Today Reading Weather Maps

Practise at: Weather Office (Environment Canada) Operational Analysis Charts or at the Data Streme site above

D Block Crime, Media and Society 12 - Today we're back in the library working on the collaborize classroom site. Just a reminder, when posting on the site it is important to identify yourself with something other than your "handle"...slim, smoidawg, imreadytogo66, jds55, bigmuzzy laundry. I really appreciate that you're willing to post in the on line class but remember "Use each other's names" and "Avoid slang and sarcasm". Now for today I'd like you to do two things:

  1. Post on the "Highway of Tears" thread...Remember you need to find out as much as you can on the Highway of Tears and then you need to tell me what you found out about the media's coverage of the Highway of Tears.
  2. Work through the three questions from Friday on the Dateline "My Kid Would Never Do That: Stranger Danger" thread along with the "Big Ideas connecting the two shows" question.
