Welcome Back...
Hello and welcome back to Vanier for the 2012-2013 school year. Today's schedule is altered for our advisory group meetings. The schedule looks like this:
9:05 - 9:35 - Advisory Group
9:40 - 10:40 - B Block
10:45 - 11:45 - A Block
11:45 - 12:35 - Lunch
12:40 - 1:55 - D Block
2:00 - 3:15 - C Block
B Block Geography 12 - Welcome to Geography 12...the most important class you'll ever take in
your life. Today we will go through the course outline package and
become familiar with the routines and structures of room 611. We will
take the class to orient ourselves to the curriculum and get ready to
look at observing as a geographer would. Tomorrow, we'll head outside
for some observational and analytical skill development. Be prepared to
look beyond simple observations and try to see a larger picture with
connections to the wider world. We'll practice an analysis of a photo in
class and you'll start working on your first assignment for the course.
A Block Law 12 - Welcome to Law 12. This class will be split between Ms. Curry from Simon Fraser University and
I for the semester (Ms. Curry will take over in three weeks). Today we will go through the course outline package
and then we'll talk about career paths that are available with Law. Next
we'll get together in groups and discuss what crime is, why we have
laws, and figure out the difference between what is legal what is moral
and what is ethical. We'll put that together on some large sheets of
paper and end with a class discussion on what we worked on in groups.
D Block Social Studies 11 - Welcome to Social Studies 11. This class will be split between Ms. Curry from Simon Fraser University and
I for the semester (Ms. Curry will take over in three weeks). I will cover Canadian government and then Ms. Curry will take over with Canadian history for the first
half of the 20th Century. I will step in again later in November and
cover the last half of the 20th Century and global social geography.
Today you will go through the course outline package and become familiar
with the routines and structures of room 611. We will take the class to
orient ourselves to the curriculum and work through a small
think-pair-share activity.
C Block Criminology 12 - Welcome to Criminology 12. Today we
will go through the course outline package and see what crimes we have
in store for the next two months. After we finish looking at the
outline, I have two questions that I'd like you to brainstorm:
What is the purpose of laws and what is a crime ?
Why do people commit crime?
After a few minutes I'd like you to partner up and get your ideas on a
large sheet of paper to share with the class. We'll try to make sense of
your ideas and will continue this through tomorrow. This will lead us
into an exploration of criminological theory.
