A Block Law 9/10 - Today we'll start with the A&E documentary on Jeffrey Dahmer (Serial Killers:Profiling the Criminal Mind). From the imdb website a review states:
Dahmer: Mystery of the Serial Killer (1993), written by Michael Husain, and focusing on one of the more grotesque serial killers Jeffrey Dahmer. This episode also traces past serial killers. Described as the "embodiment of evil" and like Haley's comet by his defence attorney - who thankfully "only appears once every 75 years", excerpts from Dahmer's trial are seen here as is his own address to the court, though Dahmer has his back to the camera. Forensic Psychiatrist Park Dietz diagnoses Dahmer as being accidently conditioned in puberty to associate sex with violence, control and mutilation, and though he is described as a necrophile, his taste is more for "sex zombies" created from the crude lobotomies of his victims, than corpses. Dietz also comments that Dahmer needed to be drunk to kill and dismember, with Dahmer's alcoholism said to be as compulsive as his murdering. The medical examiner describes what the police found in Dahmer's apartment as a "localised disaster", and the trial scenes also include the testimony
You can find an alternate version of the documentary on YouTube. It is the Biography of Jeffrey Dahmer and can be watched in parts here or below.
While watching the Dahmer video I'd like you to take notes on two questions I'd like you to answer:
- Try to build a psychological criminal profile of Jeffrey Dahmer
- Why do we glamourize serial killers in the media?
Use the following websites to help this weekend if you need to

Please try to answer these two questions as homework on the weekend for Monday next week (October 4th).
C Block Law 12 - Today you have the first half an hour in class to finish up questions from Irwin Toy Limited v Attorney General of Quebec (1989) case questions 1-6 as well as questions 1, 2, and 3 on page 46 (Reviewing Your Reading). For homework this weekend I need you to look at human rights in Canada and complete questions 1, 3, 4, & 5 from page 47 and 2, 3, & 5 from page 49 in your text. For the rest of the class we will watch and episode of Law & Order from Season 6 called Hot Pursuit. From the All Movie Guide:
Memories of the Patty Hearst affair are invoked in this episode, in which detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate a series of murders committed by a ski mask-wearing holdup team. After the criminals are captured in a deli, it turns out that one member of the team, Leslie Harlin, was allegedly kidnapped by the others. Did she willingly participate in the crime spree, or was she acting against her will? ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide
When the episode is almost over I will stop the DVD and have you make the decision of guilt or innocence as if you were the judge. You will need to justify why you made the decision.
Don't forget you have to hand in your review the Keegstra case (R. v. Keegstra, 1990) today. I will push back the date of the unit final to Tuesday next week (October 5. 2010) so it would be wise to look through the notes and questions you've completed on the first unit in law.
D Block Geograhy 12 - Yesterday we looked at earthquakes and the seismic gap concept (focusing on Izmit Turkey in 1999). Today....Oh today we look at Tsunamis and the west coast of North America. We'll watch sections of the Discovery Channel documentary "America's Tsunami: Are we Next?" You will have two questions to work on tonight in your week four package:
- How do Tsunami’s work? from p.11 &
- Why can tsunamis cause such damage and devastation? What are some characteristics of the wave that factor into how much damage it could cause? How do coastal or shoreline features factor into the extent of damage? What role could a warning system play? How effective would a warning system be for the west coast of Vancouver Island? Why?
