Today's schedule is B-A-Lunch-D-C
B - Social Studies 10 - Today we'll spend the whole class working on the introductory paragraph for our Confederation essay together. I'll give you four different options for an introductory sentence. I'll give you three different forms of your thesis statement/sentence. I'll then give you two different examples of each of the three supporting sentences you'd include after your thesis statement. Take a look:
On July 1st, 1867, four British North American colonies joined together to form a new country; Canada. In the mid 19th Century there were six underlying factors that led to Canadian Confederation. The need for the United States to expand in order to provide room for its growing population and raids on Canada from Fenians were the first set of causes for Confederation. In order to develop trade between the colonies, a fixed form of transportation needed to be built. Fear of Britain severing its ties with the colonies and the grinding to a halt of the colonial government structure in the Canadas were the final set of causes for Confederation. In order to address these problems the idea of joining the British North American colonies together became a realistic option for politicians at the time.
We'll then talk about the format of the next three paragraphs....Intro sentence - Topic sentence - Supporting sentences (what the topic is and why it was a cause for confederation) - concluding sentence. Hmmm....not too difficult. Be ready to write your first set of paragraphs tomorrow in the library.
A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today we'll finish watching the National Geographic "Forces of Nature" DVD on the "Soufriere Hills" volcano on Monserrat and Izmit Turkey and the temblor on the North Anatolian Fault. Then, you'll have some work to accomplish from the textbook ("For Review"questions 9, 10, 12, & 14 along with "For Discussion" questions 2 & 4 from page 145). The "Mapping Mountains, Earthquakes, and Volcanoes" activity is due today.
C - Criminology 12 - Today we will have our last journal entry. Last week we looked at white collar and corporate crime and today I'd like you to work on a journal entry based on questions in the textbook (and the documentary "The Corporation" that we saw on Friday). I'd like you to answer the question "Can Corporations Commit Murder?" If a corporation is considered as a person in law (as it is in the US) who can be held liable (responsible) if a corporation kills people? Use questions 1 & 2 from page 285 as well as question 1 from page 291 in your Criminology the Core textbook to help. Find an example of a story where a company was held responsible for the death of people and use it to support your ideas. Check out the following:
