A Block Legal Studies - We're off to the Learning Commons/Library to continue working on your civil litigation project. This project involves letters to potential clients. You can find tips on plain language legal writing from the Canadian Bar Association. Plain language legal writing refers to legal writing that is well thought-out, well organized, and understandable to the client without interpretation: the language is clear, the legal concepts are explained and the technical terms are defined. There are two main types of Intentional Torts:
1. Trespass to Person/Land – presence on another person’s body or property without consent. Person = assault and battery or false imprisonment (Assault – no offensive touching required – Battery – contact must be direct and it assumes fault on Defendant a.k.a. Defendant must prove they did not do action). False Imprisonment = wrongful or unauthorized confinement in a specific area.
• Consent (has to be established by Defendant) – a Defendant that can show willing consent from Plaintiff for actions can be excused from liability.
• Self Defense – force must be reasonable and necessary to prevent personal injury
• Defense of Others – 3rd party can come to the aid of another only in cases of immediate danger.
• Defense of Property – force must be reasonable and necessary but you MUST first ask the trespasser to leave

Now the questions (Benton has a worksheet for you):
1. Explain where the Jumbo Valley is located in BC?
2. What is the environmental impact of a ski resort?
3. What is the cultural impact of ski resorts?
4. Clothing supporting the preservation of the Jumbo Valley had a graphic of a Grizzly Bear. Why might Grizzly Bears be a “flagship” species for conservation and what does this mean?
5. At most ski resorts in North America we are skiing on “stolen lands”. How can we reconcile this fact and what could be done

B Block Human Geography - Today we'll deal with the key question Why Are Nation-states Difficult to Create? We'll look at colonialism and the nations created in its wake as well as the fall of the USSR and look at the 15 countries created along with problems in the Caucuses (Georgia, South Ossetia and Abkhazia).
And remember your last set of questions...
- How did Communists suppress the issues of ethnicity and nationalism? (Give several examples)
- When the Soviet Union dissolved into 15 countries in the 1990s, the new countries were based on ethnicities. Other than Russia, they can be divided into 4 groups based on their location. Complete the chart indicate the countries in each group: Baltic Region (3 states); Eastern Europe (3 states); Central Asia (5 states); Caucusus (3 states)
- In the Caucusus region, there have been many problems with the new nations and ethnicities. Summarize the main problems and note specifics of regions and peoples for each. Azeris (Azerbaijan) Armenians (Armenia) Georgians (Georgia)
- If Abkhazia and South Ossetia become independent states, how would they compare in size to microstates described earlier in this chapter?
- By definition, what is a colony?
- Define colonialism
- Summarize three reasons Europeans sought colonies.
- Which country had the largest empire? Second largest?
- Use the chart to contrast the basic colonial policies of these two countries.
- List the largest remaining colonies (Non Self-Governing Territories) in the world and who possesses each.
Today's Fit...
