B Block Criminology - Today we'll start with our look at property crimes, where we'll discuss the history of theft and make sense of the differences between occasional and professional thieves. You'll need to answer the following:
- What are the differences between a professional and an occasional thief?
- What is a "situational inducement"?
- What is a "Booster", a "Snitch", and a "Fence"?
A Block Legal Studies - Today I'll give you time to work on the Canadian court activity from yesterday. Remember in BC...
After we're looking at arrests and warrants in Canada. Our focus will be on the options police have if they believe a suspect has committed a crime, in this we'll talk about appearance notices & arrests (both warrant-less and warrant arrests)
Section 495 of the criminal code grants the police the power to arrest someone when:
- they have reasonable grounds to believe the person has committed or is about to commit an indictable offence;
- they are committing a criminal offence;
- or when they have reasonable grounds to believe that there is a warrant for that person’s arrest.
Most warrants are only valid within the province where they have been obtained and many of those warrants will have restrictions setting out a kilometer radius. It is also possible to obtain an arrest warrant that applies across Canada, however this is much harder to do.

- USGS Vulcanologist Harry Dalton hooks up with Mayor Rachel Wando and presumably live happily ever after
Now, here is what I think: I hate Dante’s Peak. It isn’t really the lack of much scientific basics – sure, they mostly understand how volcanic monitoring works but they miss the boat on how volcanoes actually work. It isn’t the acting – Linda and Pierce are good and believable. It isn’t the coffee-loving USGS geolackeys (that is accurate). However, it is the combination of everything – the over-the-top response from Harry about the volcanic rumblings, the resistance from his boss, the recalcitrant grandmother, the deus ex machina mine shelter. The damn dog jumping in the truck as they drive over an ACTIVE LAVA FLOW. The film is, at the same time, trying to be realistic while being wildly unrealistic, and in most cases, there was no need to be unrealistic when it comes to an eruption in the Cascades threatening a town. But no, we can’t take the time to actually portray real events (“Dante’s Peak” lacked a scientific adviser). Sure, it can be exciting but, for me, it was so frustrating that I couldn’t get over it.My friend I agree, wholeheartedly. C Block Human Geography - So, because we skipped around a bit, today we'll start with the Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown visit to Hawai'i. We are watching this to examine the concept of local (folk) culture through an exploration of what it means to be Hawaiian and the challenges that poses with a global (popular) culture. Remember from the video yesterday, living in Hawai'i doesn't make you Hawaiian, it makes you a resident of Hawai'i. So, often people confuse culture and identity.
After we finish the video, our job today is to look at the differences between folk and popular culture and we'll do this through the lens of music, sport (soccer football, skateboarding, UFC) and clothing...
Popular Music (I know it's from 1971 but the video of the Marvin Gaye song below is of musicians from the world over singing a pop song)
Folk Music (Musicians from the Hawaiian Islands singing a song unique to the islands)
Football (not soccer)
