Monday, June 14. 2021

Today's class schedule is:

9:15 - 11:50 B Block Human Geography
12:30 - 3:05 C Block Legal Studies

B Block Human Geography - Today we'll look at the key question "Why Do Individual Languages Vary Among Places"? To help with this we will look at dialect and accent. A dialect is a regional variation of a language distinguished by distinctive vocabulary, spelling, and pronunciation. Generally, speakers of one dialect can understand speakers of another dialect. Due to its widespread diffusion around the world, English has an especially large number of dialects and subdialects. So we'll look at English and the accents that developed here in Canada, in the United States and see how they are different from UK English. We'll also look at when dialects become languages...like Catalán...and you'll have some questions to answer today in your work package.

C Block Legal Studies - Today we'll start by concluding the 2019 movie Just Mercy based on the life of Bryan Stevenson. Bryan Stevenson is the founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative, a human rights organization in Montgomery, Alabama. After...I have secured our presence in the Learning Commons to complete the Criminal Law memo project you have due today. Five (5) of you have already submitted complete assignments whilst one (1) of you have submitted one of your two memos already. This is excellent! Remember, the purpose of the legal memorandum is to answer one or more legal questions in the context of a specific set of facts. It should contain a thorough analysis of the relevant law and provide a well-reasoned answer to the questions posed. I look forward to reading your memos. Tomorrow we'll take a look at the main differences between civil and criminal law and you'll get your final project for the year (we'll go through the sad stories of the people who walk through the doors of your law office).
