Today's schedule is CDAB

C/D Blocks Environmental & Social Sciences - Inquiry! Remember for Benton and I you'll need to have your inquiry completed by Thursday. You should've signed up for a presentation time slot for Friday...if not see Mr. Arsenault. We have D block in the learning commons/library today and we'll answer any questions we can this morning.

A Block Physical Geography -  Did you know that the City of Vancouver aims to become fully reliant on renewable energy by 2050, coupled with an 80 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions? Check out the Renewable City Strategy here (check out the City of Courtenay's Climate Action Plan here. We even have a renewable energy company here "Terratek").  Today we'll be back in the learning commons to work on your BC renewable energy activity. Remember you need to examine all five of the most common renewable energy sources (geothermal, wind, biomass, marine hydrokinetic, and solar) specifically identifying:

1.       Give a definition and an explanation of how it is produced
2.       Provide three examples of how the source is used (globally)
3.       Detail three advantages and three disadvantages of using the source
4.       Assess the potential for developing that source of energy here in BC
5.       Choose the best option out of the ones they listed to develop here in BC (think cost to make and transmit and return on investment)

You will have this week to finish this...no extra time right? Remember you must look at all five renewables and provide sound reasoning as to why you believe their top choice should be chosen as an energy project here in BC, Look at yesterday's blog post for links...and in your Geosystems textbook:

Solar pages 109-111
Wind pages 170-171
Geothermal pages 363-365
Tidal pages 523-524

B Block Human Geography -  After today there are just 2 classes remaining in the semester. Today, you'll be in the learning commons, to complete your Inquiry project. You will be presenting Friday morning and I'll fill you in on times today. Today, consider the questions below in preparation to present your Geo-Inquiry Story to the audience you have selected.

  1. Who is the audience for your Geo-Inquiry Story?
  2. What method will you use to share your Geo-Inquiry Story with them?
  3. How will you grab their attention?
  4. What is your pitch? This should be a brief description of what you did, why it is important, and how they can help.
  5. How will you use your Geo-Inquiry Story?
  6. What are your arguments to influence your audience?
  7. What is your call to action? What do you want your audience to do when they leave?

So think about what you're presenting and craft how you wish to tell your inquiry story. I will bring rubrics into the learning commons for you to to see what people will be looking for in your presentation.
