D & C Blocks Environmental and Social Sciences - Today we are off for another field study. This time we are making our way to the Deep Bay Marine Field Station. We'll stop on the way down along Baynes Sound for data collection and Young wants you to take photos of what it is that you like about the beach and water. Take this for example...I like walking my dog on a sandy beach. He likes to run...well he's over 13 now so he doesn't do too much running anymore but I like exploring the beach with him. I am always curious as to what he is drawn towards and keep wondering if he thinks there's free sushi everywhere.B Block Human Geography -Today we continue with our key question "Why Do Conflicts Arise among Ethnicities?" As with your big thinking question on religious conflict there is no easy answer to this inquiry. Today we'll focus on Lebanon, India and the Kurds. For the Kurds and Kurdistan a good primer is this GPS video from CNN with Fareed Zakaria as well as this article form the Economist or this article from Foreign Policy or the website "The Kurdish Project" following videos help too:
And, of course, there is the partition of India which displaced fifteen million people and killed more than a million as the British left India and religious communities were pitted against one another. The Guardian has a good article Why Pakistan and India remain in denial 70 years on from partition and the Conversation has an article How the Partition of India happened – and why its effects are still felt today and there's also a good piece on the BBC Partition of India: My memories
OH WAIT...Don't forget Jammu & Kashmir
A Block Physical Geography - Today we'll continue our look at weather by reviewing yesterday's topics of energy distribution and the greenhouse effect (and connect those topics to global warming). Our next focus will then be on heat and temperature in the atmosphere. What is cold and hot? What makes you feel cold or hot? How does that impact you? How might temperature impact natural operating systems on Earth? What about human constructs…how are they affected by heat and cold and are we altering temperature patterns? We'll understand the three temperature scales (Kelvin, Fahrenheit, and Celsius).
