C Block Criminology - Today we will finish presenting our media analysis of the advertisements that you and your partner were assigned last week in class. Remember I asked you to practice the skills of critical analysis of the message and the medium. After your presentations we'll go through your first handout for the course on media literacy and critical thinking that I gave you last week.
D Block Law - Today we'll watch an episode of Law & Order from Season 14 called "Bodies". While investigating the death of a teenaged girl, the detectives stumble on a pattern of crimes that indicate they are after a serial killer. The suspect, however, puts the prosecutors through an ethical ringer when he discloses his attorney's knowledge of the victims and their whereabouts. Remember what Attorney-Client privilege is? In the episode Mark Bruner's (the accused) attorney, Jessica Sheets, is so disturbed by her client that she refuses to represent him and Bruner is subsequently represented by legal aid lawyer Tim Schwimmer. Remember, for the episode, abetting murder is the equivalent of murder.
After a post episode chat (especially to see how this connects to the defense lawyer and BC Law Society code of ethics) we'll look at the objectives of sentencing (deterrence, retribution, rehabilitation, re socialization, and segregation).
A Block Physical Geography - Today we'll continue our look at weather; working on an activity called “Air: The High and Low of it” in your week 13 package. After you have finished this activity you need to complete questions 19 and 21 from page 177 in your Geosystems textbook.
Don't forget, we'll start the class by looking at the synoptic chart for North America and begin to understand weather station plots. Take some time on the following sites to learn more and to practice your weather operational analysis capabilities:
WW2010 - University of Illinois Weather site
National Weather Service "Jet Stream" online weather school
American Meteorological Society "Data Streme"
USA Today Reading Weather Maps
Practise at: Weather Office (Environment Canada) Operational Analysis Charts or at the Data Streme site above
B Block Human Geography - Today we will be going to the Library/Learning Commons for a quick presentation from Mr. Errico. He will be go over research databases and e-research options for your Inquiry Project. Remember...Inquiry is the process of being puzzled about something, generating your own questions about the subject, using information to satisfy your own interests and to develop your knowledge. What does it include? Planning, Research, Focus, Creating, Sharing, Evaluating and Reflecting. Within the context of Geography you've already started your inquiry process by asking/considering:
- What is my broad area of inquiry?
- How can I narrow down my focus...
- Some possible inquiry questions are...
- Where can I find reliable information sources?
