Today's schedule is DCBA

D Block Law - Today we will discuss the difference between criminal and immoral behaviour (crime and deviance)

 After that we're going to look at the types of criminal offenses (summary conviction, indictable, hybrid).

C Block Criminiology - We'll continue our look at sexual assault today. I need you to answer the question:

Identify and explain the causes for sexual assault

You'll need to look at evolutionary and biological factors (remember Sigmund Freud's Thantos and Eros or instinctual drives that allowed species to be successful)? Look at modern male socialization (boys are taught to be aggressive, forceful, tough, and dominating...think about how boys play when they're young) and then at hypermasculinity (where some men have callous sexual attitudes and believe that violence is "manly"). Lastly consider both violent experiences (remember that those boys who were exposed to violence in the household are more likely to commit violent acts when they grow older) and sexual motivation (social, cultural, and psychological forces...think about the messages hidden in Axe body spray commercials). What message does this commercial send to people...

Now consider what the commercial indicates about sex in modern society. Who is the commercial targeted at and what are the sexual roles in the commercial.

So to help answer the question I'd like to share the CBC DocZone Documentary "Sext Up Kids" with you. The documentary exposes how growing up in a hyper-sexualized culture hurts our kids and sends the wrong messages that could potentially lead to sexual assaults. From the CBC site:

From tiny tots strutting bikini-clad bodies in beauty pageants to companies marketing itty-bitty thongs and padded bras to 9-year olds, images of ever-younger sexualized girls have become commonplace.  Add to that: ever-younger boys with 24-7 access to hard-core internet porn.   It saturates their lives - from skate parks to the school bus – by the time they’re eighteen, 80 percent of boys are watching porn online.

So we'll watch the documentary and use information from it to help with our blog entry from Monday.

B Block Human Geography - Today we'll look at the Key Question: Why Do Migrants Face Obstacles? we'll try to understand temporary-work migrants (include guest workers in Europe and the Middle East and, historically, time-contract workers in Asia) along with illegal and unauthorized immigrants. Our goal is to understand why people who immigrate to a country face challenges when they arrive. Specifically I'm interested in the attitudes of people in host countries to immigrants. We'll try to look at the USA and Mexico and compare it to Europe. I'd also like to look at Canada and see whether it is all sunshine and rainbows or whether there's an underbelly of fear here too. You'll need to answer the following:

1. As you read pages 100-103, “Attitudes toward Immigrants learning Outcome 3.4.3 Describe characteristics of immigrants to the United States”, complete the Venn diagram to compare and contrast attitudes in the U.S. and Europe toward immigrants. 
2. Americans purchase products made in foreign countries using cheap labor. Is this any different than allowing low-cost labor to immigrate to the United States? How?  Why are employers who knowingly hire undocumented immigrants under less scrutiny than the immigrants themselves?
3. Why are new migrants to an area frequently the butt of racist or ethnic jokes? Explain in the context of the history of European emigration to the United States. Which groups were more frequently made fun of?

Who supports these anti-Globalization, anti-immigration "Nativist" xenophobic and racist groups?



So there are obstacles to migration, but is there a benefit to migration? Let's see:
