Today's schedule is B-AG-A-D-C

B Block Social Studies 11 - Today we'll finish watching episode 1 of "The Dark Years" the National Film Board cartoon about the Great Depression in Canada. Don't forget to finish up yesterday's questions about the cartoon. After, we'll focus on the political parties that emerged in reaction to the harsh economic and political climate of the time. We will look at the Union Nationale (Maurice Duplessis), the Social Credit Party (William "Bible Bill" Aberhart) and the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation (J.S. Woodsworth). We'll even talk about the Canadian Nationalist Party (Joseph Farr) and the National Social Christian Party (Adrien Arcand) which were both unabashedly fascist (Arcand eventually became the leader of the National Unity Party). Lastly you'll need to work on questions 1 & 2 on page 89. Tomorrow we'll begin our look at the rise of dictators in the 20's & 30's.

D Block Criminology 12 - Today we'll start our look at white collar crime. We will begin by learning how to identify a pyramid / ponzi scam (for more take a look at How Stuff Works). If there's time, we'll quickly look at individual exploitation of an institutional position, influence peddling & bribery, theft and employee fraud, client fraud and corporate crime. I'll introduce to Edwin H. Sutherland's Differential Association Theory (he introduced the concept "white collar crime") and we'll see what we can find on the Internet about white collar crime....spoil alert LOTS!

Lastly we'll start to watch the History Channel DVD "Scammed"...419 scams are called so because the section of the Nigerian Criminal Code that makes it illegal to obtain money under false pretences is section 419. Millions of Americans and Europeans are being targeted by scammers from Nigeria with very few being arrested or suffering any consequences.

419 is a modern day version of the 1500's Spanish Prisoner con when after the English defeated the Spanish armada in 1588-89, there were still a lot of English sailors who didn’t make it home. Letters began arriving to wealthy English families using the same idea, "if you can give me a small amount of money, then I can free this English prisoner.” In the same way then as today, the con man keeps squeezing more money and eventually begins threatening the victim. Canadian author Will Ferguson received the Giller Prize in 2012 for his book 419 - the tale of an email scam and a woman who sets out on a wide-ranging search for those she believes responsible for her father's death.

C Block Geography 12 - Today we continue our look at chemical weathering by focusing our attention on karst topography and caves. We'll look on Google Earth at Guangxi province in China, Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, and Arecibo in Puerto Rico. If you go to the Geoscape Nanaimo webpage you can find some really good graphic and information about Karst on Vancouver Island (on the left hand panel click on "Our Rock Foundations" and you'll find the subsection on caves and karst). For homework you'll need to define: stalactite, stalagmite, flowstone, sinkhole/doline, and karst valley. You'll need to answer question 17, 20, 21, and 23 from page 443 in your Geosystems text and explain how tower karst (pagodas) forms and identify where it can be found. We'll watch the Planet Earth Cave episode and you can see the opening sequence here. This will help you with the week 7 questions on Karst topography and solution cave formation. Check out the National Geographic article "Cave of the Crystal Giants" which is about Cueva de los Cristales, or Cave of Crystals, a limestone cavern with glittering selenite crystal beams discovered in 2000 nearly a thousand feet below ground in the Naica mine in northern Mexico.

For cool pictures of solution cave formations check out The Virtual Cave. Also if you wish to see these features "live" you could travel 40 kilometres south and go to the Horn Lake Caves.
