Today's schedule is C-AG-D-A-B
Hau`oli Lā Hānau to Vicki!

C Block Geography 12 - Today we'll quickly review the Mass Wasting work we did yesterday. After, we'll look at three types of snow avalanches (loose, wet, and slab). We'll understand where they occur, why they happen, and figure out the physics of snow mass movement. I'll show you the Raging Planet episode on avalanches

Crested Butte Avalanche Center
Utah Avalanche Center danger scales

D Block Criminology 12 - Today we'll finish watching Scammed (yesterday's blog entry) and then to connect last week's auto theft topic with burglars and white collar crime, we'll watch an episode of Leverage (the Boost Job) from Season 3. I'd like you to pay attention to is the skill set that each member of the leverage team has: Nathan "Nate" Ford "The Mastermind"; Sophie Devereaux "The Grifter"; Alec Hardison "The Hacker"; Eliot Spencer "The Hitter"; and Parker "The Thief". I'd also like you to think of the types of crime in the show and how each one was perpetrated (auto theft, embezzlement, fraud, and theft). In the episode Nate (the master mind of the group) briefs the team and explains that the owner of Penzer's Auto, Duke Penzer, is an ex-racer and he "clones" stolen cars by registering them in other states. Parker (the thief) knows all about how car theft works and explains how Penzer runs his scam...The episode deals with auto theft, fraud, and good burglars.

B Block Social Studies 11 - Yesterday we looked at the Co-Operative Commonwealth Federation (J.S. Woodsworth), so today we will look at the Union Nationale (Maurice Duplessis), the Social Credit Party (William "Bible Bill" Aberhart) and we'll even talk about the Canadian Nationalist Party (Joseph Farr) and the National Social Christian Party (Adrien Arcand) which were both unabashedly fascist (Arcand eventually became the leader of the National Unity Party). Next, we'll watch the Simpsons episode "The Joy of Sect". From tv.com...

Homer gets a brochure from a religious group at the airport and being highly gullible, he goes to their retreat. Because of Homer's intelligence quotient they have more trouble brainwashing him than the rest of Springfield most of who are all sucked into joining this cult. When they finally succeed with Homer, he signs over the family house to the Leader. The Leader begins taking over various media outlets, making Mr. Burns envy him. Seeing an opportunity to pay even less in taxes, Mr. Burns tries to form his own cult, although he is unsuccessful. Homer and the family move to an agricultural compound and begin picking beans. When the children become just as brainwashed as Homer, Marge escapes and enlists the help of Lovejoy, Flanders, and Willie to kidnap her family. They are able to deprogram them and then Homer tries to show the cult that the Leader is a fraud. When he does, and life returns to normal.

The purpose of watching the Simpsons is to look at the cult of the leader as they say in the episode "The leader is good, the leader is great. We surrender our will, as of this day". Mussolini and Hitler clearly played up the cult of the leader so consider that when looking at the the rise of dictators in the 1920's and the early 1930's. This sets us up nicely for next week's project (Dictatorship for Dummies)

Lastly you'll need to work on questions 1 & 2 on page 89.
