Today's schedule is C-D-Lunch-B-A

C - Criminology 12 - Today you'll start with your final quiz in the course (property crime, White collar and organized crime, and public order crimes). When finished we're off to the library to do two things: 1. finish any missing blog entries that you have yet to complete for assessment; and 2. begin work on your seminar assignment for next week.

A Reminder that the blog topics and dates are:

Blog # 7 (Monday, May 31st) Can Corporations Commit Murder?
Blog # 6 (Tuesday, May 25th) Auto Theft
Blog # 5 (Tuesday, May 18th) Clifford Olson & Marc Lepine
Blog # 4 (Monday, May 10th) Sexual Assault
Blog # 3 (Monday, May 3rd) Short & Long term Impacts of Crime Victims
Blog # 2 (Monday, April 26th) Crime and Deviance
Blog # 1 (Tuesday, April 20th) Personal Theory of Crime Causation

If you're finished all of your blog entries then you can begin to research your seminar topic. Instead of an essay or a survey of criminological theory worksheet I thought I'd give you the opportunity to spend some time looking at something that really interests you in Criminology. So basically I'd like to have a seminar on Wednesday and Thursday where you have up to five minutes to present information on a criminology topic to the class. You can look at a specific crime, a specific criminal, a specific criminological theory, a criminal justice & enforcement technique that reduces crime, or any other criminological topic but it really should be of interest to you.

So if you're really interested in gangs you can choose that (what they do, how they do it, where they operate). If you're really interested in a specific gang you can choose that (the Hells Angels or the Bandidos). If you're really interested in how police infiltrate gangs you can choose that.

What should this look like? You'll have five minutes and you can use either your blog or powerpoint or some web based resource for graphic information. Tell the class what you found out about your topic and why it interests you.

B - Social Studies 10 - Today you are in the library for your third day of research on the Economy of BC assignment (pamphlet). Take a look at Wednesday's blog entry for both an explanation of the assignment and a list of URL's that you can use to find information on each of the six sectors.

A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today and Monday are the LAST two days in the library to work on your major semester long project. You can find the assignment on the school computers in K:\Mr. A. Young\Earth and Space Science 11\Earth and Space Science Major Project.pdf. Remember that your entire project is due two weeks from today. You will need to submit all sixteen completed pages (including the eight that you've already submitted). Remember that your topics need to be related to class discussions or subjects covered in the course AND you need to have a research component.

Pau Hana!

Today's schedule is B-A-Lunch-D-C

B - Social Studies 10 -Today you are in the library for your second day of research on the Economy of BC assignment (pamphlet). Take a look at yesterday's blog entry for both an explanation of the assignment and a list of URL's that you can use to find information on each of the six sectors.

A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today we'll finish the Cosmic Voyage DVD we started yesterday in class. You'll have the block to finish the Stars and Galaxies Worksheets 1 & 2 along with questions 1-7 on page 546 of the Earth Science and the Environment textbook. You can watch the video here:

C - Criminology 12 - Today you have the block in the library to complete the questions I posted yesterday (public order crimes on prostitution, pornography, and drug use). When you finish this task you can begin research on your seminar project that you'll be presenting next week. I posted the assignment this past Monday (June 7th)...

Instead of an essay or a survey of criminological theory worksheet I thought I'd give you the opportunity to spend some time looking at something that really interests you in Criminology. So basically I'd like to have a seminar on Monday and Tuesday where you have up to five minutes to present information on a criminology topic to the class. DON'T FORGET that you have your final quiz in Criminology tomorrow...it's on property crime, white collar and organized crime, and public order crimes.

Wednesday, June 9. 2010

The schedule for the morning has been altered in order to accommodate a tutorial block. If you need help in a class you have from 8:55-9:25 this morning to seek help. The schedule looks like this

Tutorial 8:55-9:25
A 9:30 - 10:30
B 10:35 - 11:35

The rest of the day is a normal schedule.

Today's schedule is D-C-Lunch-A-B

C - Criminology 12 - Yesterday we got caught up in the talk about public order crimes. Immoral acts are distinguished from crimes on the basis of the social harm they cause. Acts that are believed to be extremely harmful to the general public are usually outlawed, whereas acts that only the harm the actor themselves are more likely to be tolerated. Acts that are illegal because they are viewed as a threat to morality are called public order crimes. Today I'll have you work on three questions:
  1. Should drugs be legalized? Why? If you believe drugs should be legalized, think about whether all drugs should be legalized or just a select few. Why should certain drugs be legalized and others not?
  2. Should prostitution be legalized? Why? If you believe it should be legalized, should all the forms of prostitution described in your text be legalized, or only a select few? If prostitution were legalized should government be able to exercise some control over it?
  3. Does pornography lead to violence? Why? Is it harmful? Why Consider all forms of pornography (what is currently legal and illegal) when you answer this question
A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today, we'll begin our look at the astronomy section of Earth and Space Science. This is the 41st anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing (July 20, 1969) an incredible feat for humankind and when you take a look at the moon, reflect on that.

You can find out all kinds of neat data on NASA's Sky Events calendar. There's lots of astronomical events occurring this year, but unless you'll be in the Cook Islands or Easter Island, you will not have the chance to see a full solar eclipse this year. We will, however, get the chance to see a total lunar eclipse on the first day of winter for us in the Northern hemisphere December 21, 2010. This month, the New Moon (No not the movie!) occurs on June 12th @ 03:15 PST while the Full Moon occurs on June 26th @ 03:30 PST.

I will then hand out your Stars and Galaxies Worksheets # 1 & 2 which we will work on next along with "For Review" questions 1-7 on page 546 (don't complete it for homework - we'll work on it both at the end of class today and in class tomorrow).

B - Social Studies 10 - Today we will be in the library working on our last assignment of the year; a pamphlet on the Economy of BC. You will need to use the web pages I'll post over the next five days to find out the key points and important information about the following industries:
  1. Forestry
  2. Fisheries
  3. Agriculture
  4. Mining
  5. Tourism
  6. Other (film & television production and technology)
For each industry you need to look for the following data:
  1. An overview of extraction/production methods (what is taken or produced and how it is done)
  2. An overview of the impact on the economy of the province (how much money is made, how many people are employed, where in the province it is done, where the product is sold)
  3. An explanation of the issues associated with the industry (social, environmental, economic concerns)
This information will need to be condensed in a pamphlet that will be your last major assignment for the year. I'll give you some organizational strategies today in the library. In your pamphlet, you'll also need to include the glossary definitions that I posted on the blog yesterday.

Today's schedule is A-B-Lunch-C-D

A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today you need to finish the Atmosphere Worksheets 1-3 and get them handed in to me for marks. I'll post your grades so that you can see how you're doing in the class. I'll also help you with some of the work by looking at Environment Canada's Weather Office and the National Weather Service's Data Streme. We'll look at some synoptic charts (weather maps) and focus on reading isobars, fronts, and active weather.

B - Social Studies 10 - Today we'll begin our work on the economy of BC. Today you'll need to begin an economic glossary for Social Studies 10. You need to define the following terms in your own words (I'll go over some of them with you in the class today):
  1. business cycle
  2. capital (economic)
  3. Consumer Price Index (CPI)
  4. economic consumption
  5. economic demand
  6. economic market
  7. economic sector
  8. economic supply
  9. goods
  10. Gross Domestic Product (GDP)
  11. Gross National Product (GNP)
  12. heartland/hinterland
  13. non-renewable resource
  14. manufacturing based economy
  15. primary industry
  16. renewable resource
  17. resource based economy
  18. secondary industry
  19. services
  20. tertiary industry
  21. pre-Industrial (agricultural) society
  22. Industrial (mechanized) society
  23. post-Industrial (technological) society
Tomorrow we're in the library working our LAST ASSIGNMENT, the sectors of BC's economy.

C - Criminology 12 - Today we'll start a quick look at Social Order crimes. I'll remind you that we already looked at the difference between what is deviant and what is criminal and this small unit covers crimes that straddle the line between the two. We'll look at the legal definition of "obscenity" so that we can understand the difference between the subjective and objective beliefs of obscenity. Tomorrow we'll look at prostitution, pornography, and drug use.

Today's schedule is C-D-Lunch-B-A

C - Criminology 12 - Today you have the class to finish any missing blog entries that you have yet to complete for assessment. The blog topics and dates are:

So basically I'd like to have a seminar on Monday and Tuesday where you have up to five minutes to present information on a criminology topic to the class. What should this look like? You'll have five minutes and you can use either your blog or powerpoint or some web based resource for graphic information. Tell the class what you found out about your topic and why it interests you.

B - Social Studies 10 - Today you have your Western History unit final test. If you studied and are prepared then I'm certain you will do fine. If there's time, we will mark the first two sections of the test together in class. You do have a project to hand in to me today. It is crucial that you get your Canadian Pacific Railway book handed in to me. If, for some reason, you cannot get your assignment in to me today you must come and talk with me to avoid a zero. Considering this is a major project I hope you realize the importance of its completion. Good Luck and my daughter awaits your stories.

A - Earth & Space Science 11 - Today we'll take the class to finish up the Atmosphere / Weather worksheets 1-3 that we started last Thursday. You need to finish these today as tomorrow we start astronomy and space science.
