A - Social Studies 11 - Today we'll examine the dramatic changes to Canada's culture and identity as a result of the "baby boom" generation. We'll look at how society was altered by car culture, "suburbia", and television (think consumption). British Columbia's own Nat Bailey started White Spot in 1928 and the 1950's saw the proliferation of "car hops" due to the culture of the automobile. Today, you'll need to work on question 2, 3, & 5 from page 167.
B - Geography 12 - Today we are in the library for day two of research for our severe weather power point project. Remember that there are these things in the library called "books"; you may remember what they look like...there are paper pages with pictures and information on them bound together. Sarcasm aside please remember that you will need to have at least one print (book or magazine) source for your presentation. I have books in my room on severe weather that you might want to look at. The purpose of this project is to learn about severe weather and your topic in depth. Please do not plagiarize work and present it as if it were your own. Show me what you have learned. Tomorrow will be our last day to work on this during class time so don't get lost on youtube watching videos of people getting struck by lightning or hit by hail (no matter how cool that is!) Having said that the Discovery Channel has a great series called Raging Planet with some cool video footage that you could embed in your power point presentation here:

C - Introduction to Law 9/10 - Today we are back in the library working on our crime scene reconstruction - investigation case file activity. This assignment is due on Thursday of this week (December 17th, 2009) and if you are near completion then you may also work on your forensic science web page project. Do not waste time on either of these assignments as they form a large component of your grade in the class.
For the forensic science web page assignment, you will not have the opportunity to choose a topic for this assignment until you've handed in your previous project. There are many on line web page creation sites (including this site which is kind of like a bloggers for dummies site). Try the following:
http://www.weebly.com/
http://sites.google.com/
http://geocities.yahoo.com/
http://www.webs.com/
Of course the creation of your site is really the last step in the process. Once you've chosen your topic (through me) you will need to get started working on finding information about it. Don't forget there are some fabulous print resources in the library and you must have at least one print source for this assignment. The details for the assignment (criteria) are listed on page 12 of your course book (handout). But here's a review:
It will be your responsibility to create one section of the G.P. Vanier Forensic Science / Criminology web page. You will need to find the following information about your chosen subject topic:
- A description of your subject which includes an explanation of what is (history, background information, people associated with it, important milestones and discoveries).
- An explanation of how your topic is collected at the crime scene and the tools that are used to interpret the evidence at the crime lab.
- An description showing how the subject is used to solve crimes (identifying suspects, showing the cause of death, tracing the source of evidence or identifying a possible alternate crime scene).
- Graphics - photos, illustrations, and animations that show and explain your subject.
- Case Study - Provide one example of how your subject was used to solve a real crime.
- Provide URL’s as links for further investigation of your subject.
D - Law 12 - Today we will continue our look at civil law procedures focusing on judgements. We'll look at the differences between pecuniary and non-pecuniary losses (general damages) and then we'll look at special, punative, and nominal damages along with injunctions and enforcing judgements. At the end of the class we'll go over the Thornton et al. v. Board of School Trustees of School District No. 57 (Prince George) et al. (1978) case together (kind of an important case for non-pecuniary loss in Canada).
