Today's schedule is CDAB

C & D Blocks Environmental and Social Sciences - Today you will be with Benton for the morning (in room 145)…the first block you’ll be doing a mountain ecology section on Hawai’i…remember, you've been looking at the Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) protest over the Thirty Meter Telescope Project on Mauna Kea with me. So today birds, plants and Traditional Ecological Knowledge


By the way I love what Dr. Sam 'Ohu Gon III has to say about Hawai'i as a microcosm for the world and the melding of Traditional Ecological Knowledge with Western science...maybe it's what Benton and I have been trying to get you to understand all semester long. For the second block, you'll be doing some fish trapping with the Tsolum River Restoration Society on Towhee Creek outside (here on the school property).

A Block Physical Geography - Today, we'll look at Thunderstorms. We will look at how thunderstorms develop and what damage they can do. I'll show you a few quick videos of hail and lightning to see how they form and then we'll watch the Lightning episode of Raging Planet. While this is on, you'll need to work on questions 13 and 14 from page 248 of your Geosystems textbook.

B Block Human Geography - Today we'll watch the Anthony Bourdain Parts Unknown episode on Armenia And remember the questions for today and tomorrow...

1. How did Communists suppress the issues of ethnicity and nationalism?  (Give several examples)
2. When the Soviet Union dissolved into 15 countries in the 1990s, the new countries were based on ethnicities. Other than Russia, they can be divided into 4 groups based on their location. Complete the chart indicate the countries in each group: Baltic Region (3 states); Eastern Europe (3 states); Central Asia (5 states); Caucusus (3 states)
3. In the Caucusus region, there have been many problems with the new nations and ethnicities. Summarize the main problems and note specifics of regions and peoples for each. Azeris (Azerbaijan) Armenians (Armenia) Georgians (Georgia)
4. If Abkhazia and South Ossetia become independent states, how would they compare in size to microstates described earlier in this chapter?
