Today's schedule is A-AG-BCD

A Block Physical Geography -Today we'll be in the learning commons to work on your BC renewable energy activity (your final exam). In this activity you will need to examine the five most common renewable energy sources (geothermal, wind, biomass, marine hydrokinetic, and solar) As about 90% of electricity in B.C. is produced from hydroelectric sources (B.C. is home to over 15 709 MW of hydroelectric capacity) I've excluded it from the mix …you will need to:

1.       Give a definition and an explanation of how it is produced

2.       Provide three examples of how the source is used (globally)

3.       Detail at least three advantages and three disadvantages of using the source

4.       Assess the potential for developing that source of energy here in BC (consider cost of production and distribution)

5.       Choose the best option out of the ones they listed to develop here in BC (think cost to make and transmit and return on investment)

You will have this week in the learning commons to finish this. Remember you must look at the five renewables (not Hydro) and provide sound reasoning as to why you believe their top choice should be chosen as an energy project here in BC. Here are some links for you to use:

B Block Human Geography -
After today there are 4 classes remaining in the semester, in the learning commons, to complete your geo inquiry story. Analyze all of the data you have collected. Create various maps and charts representing various findings. As you begin the analysis, look for patterns, clusters, or trends that might help you answer your Geo-Inquiry Question. You have now (hopefully) answered your Geo-Inquiry Question and created a compelling Geo-Inquiry Story to tell. Next, you need to create an action plan for how you will use your Geo-Inquiry Story to take action. Consider the following questions:

1. Which do you think is the best way to address this issue in your community, community action or public policy
2. What are the advantages of this solution? What are the disadvantages? You will need to be able to address the disadvantages, as well.
3. List some influential individuals or groups who might be willing to support your proposal.
4. How might you be able to win the support of some of these individuals or groups?

Look at Friday's blog entry for more info.

C Block Criminology - Today we're back in the learning commons working on our last online work. Last week we looked at the crime media coverage of the Russell Williams case both from Canada and the United States. I would like for you to answer Do you think that Canadian media coverage of crime is similar to American media coverage of crime? After you've indicated your ideas on that try to answer the following as well:

  1. Do you think it would be a good idea to add video cameras and recording devices to the court room in Canada so that the media could add to their coverage of trials (like that of Russell Williams)?
  2. Do you think the media should state their opinion when reporting on crime cases or should they remain "neutral"?
  3. Should all of the details from a trial be fully disclosed to the public or should the media select what information is presented
  4. How much do we need to know about trials and the accused actions?

From David A. Gibb at the Huffington Post
Russell Williams, the former commander of Canada's largest military airfield, was convicted in October of first-degree murder in the sex slayings of two Ontario women, Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, 38, and Jessica Lloyd, 27. He also pleaded guilty to 82 fetish break-and-enters and thefts, as well as two sexual assaults. Williams methodically chronicled and catalogued his crimes, shooting videos and still photos of himself in the act and amassing a huge collection of undergarments stolen from women and girls. Dozens of gruesome photos were shown during his trial. He is currently serving a life sentence in Kingston Penitentiary and can apply for unsupervised release, including day parole, after serving 22 years of his sentence. The Canadian Forces stripped him of his rank of colonel after his conviction
D Block Law - After today there are 4 classes remaining in the semester, with just two more classes in the learning commons to complete your civil litigator project. You will have a final test on civil law (torts, negligence, and family law) tomorrow...hope you come prepared. I will bring previous examples of the project with me to the learning commons for you to peruse if you'd like.
