Today's schedule is A-AG-BCD

A Block Physical Geography - Today we will watch the rest of the movie Home. We'll talk about the things you can do to address the problems / issues that the movie raises. Think about the title. What is our collective home? Now think about the statement from the beginning of the film...

Listen to me, please. You're like me, a homo sapiens. A wise human. Life; a miracle in the universe appeared around 4 billion years ago and we humans only 200,000 years ago, yet we have succeeded in disrupting the balance so essential to life. Listen carefully to this extraordinary story, which is yours, and decide what you want to do with it.

I cannot stress this enough...this movie is amazing! It perfectly encapsulates Geography 12...it is both a cautionary tale of human impacts and a love letter to the planet.

B Block Human Geography - Today we'll look at the Key Issue "Why Are Urban Areas Expanding"? We'll try to understand urban areas, census metropolitan areas, annexation, sub-urbanization, sprawl, smart growth and transportation into and out of city cores.

You have some questions to answer for me:
  1. What is required before an area can be annexed by a city?
  2. In the past, why did peripheral areas desire annexation? What has changed?
  3. What is meant by the statement: the “periphery of U.S. cities looks like Swiss cheese”?
  4. What has prevented the peripheries of European cities from looking like Swiss cheese?
  5. What is smart growth?
  6. List four ways demand for congested roads is being reduced
  7. List four ways in which public transportation is better than an automobile.
C Block Criminology - Today your blog entry related to Casey Anthony is:

Is Social Media (Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Vine, Instagram, Snapchat) good or bad for criminal trials and the news/media coverage of them? Use examples from the Casey Anthony trial to explain your ideas

Think about who reports information and how that information is used.
Think about your privacy and how you manage your on-line presence.
Think about how social media can be introduced as evidence at trials.
Think about how social media can be used for reporting during trials.
Do viewer/user comments about media coverage of a trial provide valuable feedback for discussion or not? Why?

D Block Law - After today there are 9 classes remaining in the semester, with just five more classes in the learning commons to complete your civil litigator project. You will have a final test on civil law (torts, negligence, and family law) this Thursday, June 13th. I will bring previous examples of the project with me to the learning commons for you to peruse if you'd like. Tomorrow we'll begin the movie "The War of the Roses"
