Room 611

Nestled away, in the back corner of G.P. Vanier, you'll find room 115 (we used to be 611). Lurking in the shadows of this room is Mr. Young...waiting to pounce on unsuspecting students and natter on about volcanoes, hail, psychopathy, criminal law defenses, cultural diffusion, media theories, crime, and urban models of city development. He loves his job in 115 and can't wait to work with you this year.

About Me

Geo Teacher: Currently I teach Geography, Environmental Studies, Criminology, and Law at G.P. Vanier Seconday School. From 2008 to 2017, I also taught EDCP 432, a methods class in the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy (Faculty of Education) at UBC. I was the BC and Yukon Territory representative on the national executive for Canadian Geographic Education (CGE) from 2003-2010. In 2010, I was inducted as a member of the College of Fellows for the Royal Canadian Geographical Society. In 2012, I wrote "Teaching Elementary Students to Think Geographically" which was published as Chapter 5 in the updated edition of The Anthology of Social Studies: Issues and Strategies for Elementary Teachers. In 2013, the RCGS and CGE honoured me with the inaugural "Innovation in Geography Teaching" national award. In February 2017, I was highlighted by Canadian Geographic as their inaugural "Geography Teacher of the Month". In 2019, the RCGS and CGE honoured me with the "Alex Trebek Medal for Geographic Literacy", another Canadian national geography award. I have both a B.A. (advanced major) and a B.Ed. from Dalhousie University and a M.A. in Environmental Education from Royal Roads University.
