B Block Criminology - Okay, grade 12's...you need to go to the Multi Purpose Room for Grad Valedictorian speeches and once they're done (9:30) I'll see you back in the class. Oh and at 10:15 we have a fire drill so, you know it's a messed up block.
Remember, not only are media constructions (made by humans) but that the receiving audience interprets the meaning of the message themselves. There are some crucial media analysis skills that we need to build on for the rest of the course in order to understand the connection amongst different media platforms, the communication of crime as information and as entertainment, and the interpretation of crime from the consumer/viewer/engager point of view. The video below outlines some important skills we'll build on...

Media, particularly social media, plays a significant role in shaping public perceptions of crime and can have both positive and negative impacts. It can be used for disseminating information, raising awareness, and promoting community safety. However, media coverage can also distort reality, overemphasize certain types of crime, and contribute to fear and anxiety
So media + crime = constructions of opinions and subjective reality.
Some of us will have started out watching crime through the relatively innocent eyes of Scooby Doo. As you know, Scooby Doo is a long-running animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions (and now Cartoon Network Studios) from 1969 to 1991 and 2002 to present highlighting the hi jinx of Scooby-Doo and four teenagers: Fred "Freddie" Jones, Daphne Blake, Velma Dinkley, and Norville "Shaggy" Rogers. These five drive around the world in a van called the "Mystery Machine," and solve mysteries typically involving tales of ghosts and other supernatural forces. At the end of each episode, the supernatural forces turn out to have a rational explanation (usually a criminal of some sort attempting to scare people away so that he/she could commit crimes). Main versions include:
Go-Go Mystery Machine (TBA, an upcoming anime entry starring Scooby-Doo and Shaggy in Japan)
Velma (2023-2024)
Scooby-Doo and Guess Who? (2019-2021)
Be Cool, Scooby Doo! (2015-2018)
Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated (2010-2013)
What’s New Scooby Doo? (2002-2006)
A Pup Named Scooby Doo (1988-1991)
The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show (1983-1984)
Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo (1979-1982)
The Scooby-Doo Show (1976-1978)
Scooby Doo Where Are You! (1969-1970)
The New Scooby and Scrappy Doo Show (1983-1984)
Scooby Doo and Scrappy Doo (1979-1982)
The Scooby-Doo Show (1976-1978)
Scooby Doo Where Are You! (1969-1970)
There are some other versions we will never discuss...like ever (Dinomutt?😕)
So, today I'd like you to watch a "recent incarnation"...Be Cool, Scooby Doo (2015-2018). We'll watch the episode "Poodle Justice" where Scooby gets to visit the set of his favorite TV show. Here, he meets the lovely dog actress star, Lady Annabelle (his celebrity crush). Unfortunately, he doesn't have the courage to talk to her, and to make matters worse, a gargoyle is scaring everyone off set. This sets us up for our deeper look into the franchise and the messaging it sends about crime and society.
Aaaaaaannnnnnd of course... announced back on March 25th, Netflix Announces First-Ever Live-Action Scooby-Doo Series
Based on the characters from Hanna-Barbera, the latest show is a modern reimagining of the iconic mystery-solving group of teens and their very special dog. During their final summer at Camp Ruby-Spears, old friends Shaggy and Daphne get embroiled in a haunting mystery surrounding a lonely lost Great Dane puppy that may have been a witness to a supernatural murder. Together with the pragmatic and scientific townie, Velma, and the strange, but ever-so-handsome new kid, Freddy, they set out to solve the case that is pulling each of them into a creepy nightmare that threatens to expose all of their secrets.
A Block Physical Geography - First, you have two questions on Ozone to work through (and we'll watch two videos from yesterday to help)
- Why is stratospheric ozone (O3) so important? Describe the effects created by increases in ultraviolet light reaching the surface. (Geo Core p. 20-21)
- Summarize the ozone predicament and the present trends, and any treaties that intend to protect the ozone layer. (Geo Core p. 20-21)
