Today's schedule is AG-A-B-C-D

A Block Criminology 12 - Today you'll have an opportunity to get caught up on your blog entries. What should you have so far:

1. On Monday, December 16th I asked you "Explain how sexual behaviour could be socialized in males. Do you think that males who commit sexual assault are "hypermasculine"? Why and where do men learn "hypermasculine" behaviour?"
2. On Monday, December December 9th I asked you "I'd like you to find out as much information as you can about two notorous Canadian murderers... Clifford Robert Olson Jr. (Serial) and Marc Lépine (Mass). For this assignment I'd like you to tell me what they did and why they did it....use Levin & Fox's typology of serial and mass murder to explain motives. Aside from answering what they did and why they did it, also try to answer what can we learn from their horrific actions and is it ever possible to stop people like this in Canada? Why or Why not?
3. On Monday, December 2nd I asked you "What are the short and long term impacts on victims of Crime? Use Harper in the Law & Order Special Victim's Unit episode you watched on Friday and Chapter 3 pages 54-7 in CRIM textbook to help. Next, I'd like you to find an article (news story) about a victim of crime and for that you should outline the impacts of the crime on them. Finally, using the two stories (one fictional and one real) explain what we should do to mitigate (soften the impact) the impacts of crime on victims (be realistic)".
4. On Monday, November 25th I asked you "Why has British Columbia consistently had high rates of police reported drug offences? Use what you've learned about crime theories, your own thoughts on crime theories to answer why. Once you've done this, then find an article about a recent drug crime here in B.C., make a link to the news article on your blogsite and then write how crime theories explain the crime" and
5. On Monday, November 18th I asked you to "write out your crime theory, and then find an article about a recent crime here in Canada. Make a link to the news article on your blogsite and then write how your theory explains the crime". 

If you are up to date then you may begin work on your final project. We have two more blogs to complete (on auto theft and on burglars), however we'll work on those as the next two weeks go along. So, if you're finished all of your blog entries to date then you can begin to research your seminar topic. Instead of an essay or a survey of criminological theory worksheet I thought I'd give you the opportunity to spend some time looking at something that really interests you in Criminology. So basically I'd like to have a seminar on the Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of the last week in January where you have between five to ten minutes to present information on a criminology topic to the class. You can look at a specific crime, a specific criminal, a specific criminological theory, a criminal justice & enforcement technique that reduces crime, or any other criminological topic but it really should be of interest to you. So if you're really interested in gangs you can choose that (what they do, how they do it, where they operate). If you're really interested in a specific gang you can choose that (the Hells Angels or the Bandidos). If you're really interested in how police infiltrate gangs you can choose that. What should this look like? You'll have five to eight minutes and you can use either your blog or powerpoint or some web based resource for graphic information. Tell the class what you found out about your topic and why it interests you.

B Block Social Studies 10 - Today we'll discuss the insane geography that the CPR was constructed upon. We'll look at the stretches of northern Ontario where track was built and then rebuilt again due to "geographic difficulties". The photo to the left is CPR construction north of Lake Superior. We'll learn about Andrew Onderdonk and the railway through BC. We'll focus on John A. Macdonald's "National Policy" and look at the connection between Sir Hugh Allan's Pacific Railway Company, the Pacific Scandal and Macdonald's defeat in 1873. We'll then look at George Stephen & Donald A. Smith's Pacific Railway Company which hired William Van Horne and Andrew Onderdonk to build the railway. At the end of the class you'll have time to finish up work from before the break

C Block Crime, Media and Society 12 - Today we're back in the library working on the collaborize classroom site. Now for today I'd like you to do two things:

1. Work on the Casey Anthony thread question about the media's reporting of crime, celebrity and the value of social media.
2. Begin work on the individual media monitoring assignment (more on the collaborize class site)

D Block Law 12 - Today we'll look at intentional torts focusing on trespass to property and trespass to person (assault and battery & false imprisonment) along with defences to these intentional torts (consent, self-defence, defence of a third party, defence of property, legal authority, and necessity). We'll also look at defamation of character and strict liability in civil law. This gets us to the end of the torts unit in Law 12 and then we'll begin our look at family law.
