Today's schedule is B-A-D-C

B Block Geography 12 - Today we'll continue our look at resources, resource use, and management issues. We'll talk about renewable and non-renewable resources along with the four ethical views on resource use (economic/exploitation; preservationist; balanced-multiple use; and ecological or sustainable). Our focus will be on water consumption (Don't forget I'd like you to track your water consumption for the week). After, we'll watch the first few sections of the Human Footprint DVD we previewed yesterday. We'll get through scenes 1-6 today (from birth up to early 20's) and this will take about 45 minutes of class time. When the DVD is over I'd like you to answer the following:
  1. Why do different cultures use and consume things at different rates? What do the numbers and facts in the video say about North American society?
  2. In some areas of the world people are already in conflict over a limited amount of natural resources. How will a growing population affect people’s access to food, potable (safe drinking) water, and fuel? What affect might the population increase have on pollution and encroachment on wildlife habitats?

A Block Social Studies 11 - Today we'll finish our look at the issues surrounding Quebec-Canada relations starting with the rise of the Parti-Quebecois who came to power in 1976 and in 1980 held a referendum in the province of Quebec to determine if there was a desire to pull the province out of confederation (really it was a convoluted form of independence where the province would still maintain Canadian currency but be able to make its own laws). To help understand this we'll watch Canada: A People’s History “In an Uncertain World” chapter 3 “The Choice”. In the end the province voted 59% "non" and 40% "oui". Since it was somewhat close, the government of Canada reopened constitutional talks and "repatriated" the constitution from Great Britain. In this, however, Quebec once again felt "betrayed" or left out. The government of Canada tried Constitutional Reform in 1988 & 1992 (both of which failed) and in 1995 the Parti-Quebecois held a referendum on separation that was narrowly defeated (50.58% "No" to 49.42% "Yes). This will get us to the end of our history unit and tomorrow we'll begin our look at human social geography - starting with demography.

C Block Law 9/10 - Today we begin our look at courts and trial procedures. We'll look at the three court levels in BC (Provincial, Supreme, and Appellate) then we'll focus on courtroom organization and then we'll discuss the roles and responsibilities of the judge, the crown prosecutor, defense counsel, the court clerk, court recorder, and sheriff. After, we'll look at the advantages of trial by jury and then we'll understand the methods and challenges to jury selection. You'll need to complete questions 2-6 on page 124 of your All About Law text.
Justice BC - What is Jury Duty?
