Today's schedule is A-AG-B-C-D
A Block Social Studies 11 - Today we'll switch our focus to the Pacific looking at the Manhattan Project and the
use of nuclear weapons in Japan (Hiroshima and Nagasaki). This takes us to V-J
Day and the end of World War Two. I'll have you work on questions 1-4 on page 121 (Is the use of Weapons of Mass
Destruction ever justified?) and questions 1 & 2 on page 122 from the
Counterpoints textbook and then watch the American Civil Defense video "Duck and
Cover" along with a bit of the Atomic Cafe movie in class. The Atomic Cafe
contains civil defense movies from the 1940's through the 1960's and will help
you understand the culture of fear that developed throughout the Cold War. Today
we'll watch the first few sections that deal with the Manhattan Project and the
attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
B Block Geography 12 - Since there were four of you in class last Friday...today we'll go to the library to play the Stop Disasters game. The scenario I would like you to work on is the Caribbean Island Hurricane simulation. There is a population of 330 people in your coastal town, but only 180 are currently housed. You will need to develop some housing for the people in the town. You will need to build a hospital, a school, and anchor all the boats in the port. You have a budget of $50,000 to work with and don't forget to develop some defenses to protect people, buildings, and livelihoods. When you click on an object square you will likely get three choices: info, develop, & amp; defences. Read through your options and try to uncover all 15 key facts (which will give you extra points). When you finish keep a track of your highest score (you might get through two games) and respond to this post with things you learned and what your scores were. Have fun playing and learn something.
C Block Law 9/10 - Today we will continue our look at crime scene investigation and you'll have
time to work on your "Clue Us In" crime scene reconstruction project. We will also watch the CSI episode "Burden
of Proof" (Season 2 Episode 215). Try to identify the evidence used to find
out who committed the crime in the episode.

Final Score: 60,630
I learnt that even if you think a house is secure, it could still fall apart depending on the hurricane!!
My score was 65,080, 1 person died and 11 people were injured and three buildings were destroyed. I learned that a disaster such as a hurricane is very destructive and precautions taken to protect the infrastructure can be very expensive but if preventative measures are not taken the cost of the resulting damage can be substantially larger. Upgrading housing and protecting the key industries such as crops, fisheries, agriculture and tourism is a good way to ensure that more people will survive and those who survive will have a lively hood to return to. Early warning systems and educative courses for the community are essential as they can help prepare people for an emergency situation. It seems as though the best offence against a hurricane is a very well prepared defense.

i learned that having strong houses even if they're expensive is important in a hurricane, and that trees can actually be a pretty good protection.

I got 73000 the first time, and I got 70000 thousand the second time. In the second time I was able to get 0$ damage, 0 Injured and 0 Deaths but still a low score. I learned that its hard to prepare for an hurricane and that all the boats need to be anchored down,Telephone wires also need to be anchored and it's good to prepare and send out signals to the town people so they can get sheltered before the hurricane hits. Also sand is bad to build on.
My high score was 83,270 with $500 damage and 1 death. I leaned of the importance of sheltering buildings from the brunt of the storm through the various means avalible (trees, break waters, etc.) keep housing elevated and sheltered inland away from water.

my score was 63920 cost of damage was 8550 people injured 161 and 6 dead. i learned you have to be careful where you build a building, even if it is secure it can still be destroyed depending on where the building was built

Final Score:70, 420
5 dead and 81 injured
I learnt: That having early warning systems increase protection, and help prepare emergency shelters. These warnings also help families to gather/store basic supplies, because people may not receive help until a couple days after the hurricane hits.
Meaghan
Level hard: 39,190 0 dead 10 injured
I learnt that high ground does not necessarily mean safe, and that more measures should be taken to protect livelihood and shelter and evacuation routes and warnings help people find shelter faster.
