D Block Social Studies 10 - Today we are going to finish our editorial cartoon work. Your cartoons are due today in class so it would be wise to spend today's class time in a productive and useful manner....in other words get it done. Some help:
For your Pro/Anti Confederation cartoon consider
- context — the circumstances in which it was created (imagine it is 1865 or 1866 in the Atlantic colony you've selected)
- content — the details of what it shows (how will you convey your message of pro or anti confederation)
- target — who or what it is directed at (colonists or politicians)
- style — how it presents the content, through images, words and humour which taken together determine its
- message — the key point it is trying to make, or the idea it is putting forward.
- symbolism - using an object to stand for an idea
- captioning and labels - used for clarity and emphasis
- analogy - a comparison between two unlike things that share some characteristics
- irony - the difference between the way things are and the way things should be or the way things are expected to be
- exaggeration or characture - overstating or magnifying a problem or a physical feature or habit: big nose, bushy eyebrows, large ears, baldness
B Block Geography 12 - Today we will look at deserts and desert environments. We'll see what Tim &
Moby have to say about deserts and we'll analyze the different types of deserts.
I'll show you the Namib desert and the Skeleton Coast and then you'll define alluvial fan, playa, yardang,
and sand
dune. You'll have a question on desertification and there are some good

If there's time we'll watch the Planet Earth video on Deserts. Do not forget that you have a unit final test on Thursday.

A Block Social Studies 11 - Today we will spend the first part of the class discussing Communism. We'll take some notes down about Communist ideology and Marxism. We'll briefly look at the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917 and assess its impact on countries throughout Europe and here in Canada. After this we'll discuss what a union is and the perception of unions in 1919. Lastly I'd like you to look at the section on the Winnipeg General Strike in your Counterpoints textbook and work on questions 1 & 2 from page 51.
