Geography Weekend Nov 8-9, 2008

Hello Geography Family!

This weekend I'd like you to take an hour or two to play the game stop disasters. The scenario I would like you to work on is Eastern/Central European flooding and the screen captures on the left are from this game. There is a population of 700 people in your mountainous town, but only 470 are currently housed. You will need to develop some housing for the people in the town. You will need to build a hospital, two schools, and cover all of the wells in town. You have a budget of $40,000 to work with and don't forget to develop some defenses to protect people, buildings, and livelihoods. When you click on an object square you will likely get three choices: info, develop, & defences. Read through your options and try to uncover all 15 key facts (which will give you extra points). When you finish keep a track of your highest score (you might get through two or three games) and respond to this post with things you learned and what your scores were. Have fun playing and learn something. See you Monday and remember...only a week left until Geography Awareness Week (November 16 - 22, 2008) Geography Rules!

My score 98,140, I learned that the more natural defences there are (e.g. wetlands, trees) the better off the town will be.

86, 400.

The more natural defenses, and the placement of them over the floodplain, help limit flooding.

Building buildings on higher elevations obviously helps protect them, as well as the type material you make the house out of.

Score of freaking 101,701, I learned that a school uprading and educating is good so people can not be caught unawared.

My score was, 57 290. Building houses on higher ground helped, as well as putting barriers and lots of trees by the river.

71, 200 -Natural Defenses
89,240 -Drain Circle

I tried the natural defenses and of course they worked but that top score of mine was from simply circling the developed area with drains.

i had a score of 65000 i learned that covering the drainage pipes prevents the sweage from comin out in the flood and that wetlands and other natural defenses are effective
